EICR Electrical Certificate in Glasgow
What an EICR is and why you might need one
An EICR, or Electrical Installation Condition Report, is a formal inspection of the wiring, consumer unit, sockets and circuits in your home. A qualified electrician tests the installation, records any faults or deterioration, and grades each issue so you know exactly what is safe, what needs attention, and what needs fixing before it becomes a hazard.
In Scotland, landlords letting a property privately are legally required to have a valid EICR, renewed at least every five years. For homeowners, an EICR is strongly recommended if you are buying or selling, if your home has not been inspected in ten years or more, or if you have noticed warning signs like flickering lights, warm sockets, or fuses that trip for no obvious reason. Many Glasgow tenements and older sandstone properties still run on wiring that predates modern safety standards, so a condition report is often the sensible first step.
How we carry out your EICR in Glasgow
Home Rewire is based at 112b Ayr Road in Newton Mearns and covers all of Greater Glasgow, from Shawlands and the Southside through the West End, East End and out to the surrounding towns. We are a family firm, established in 2000, and rewiring and electrical safety in homes is all we do.
When you book an EICR with us, you get a named electrician, not just a van number. They will test every circuit, inspect your consumer unit, check earthing and bonding, and talk you through what they find in plain language. You will receive a clear written report with each observation coded so you can see at a glance whether your installation is satisfactory or needs remedial work.
One point of contact handles your job from the first phone call to the finished certificate, so you are never chasing an office or repeating yourself to different people.
What happens if your EICR finds problems
An unsatisfactory EICR is not a crisis, it is information. Codes C1 and C2 mean something needs fixed to make the installation safe, and C3 items are recommendations rather than requirements. Your electrician will explain exactly what each code means for your home and what your realistic options are, from targeted repairs to a full rewire if the wiring has genuinely reached the end of its life.
Because we are Scotland's domestic rewiring specialists, we can carry out whatever remedial work the report identifies, and we do it properly. That includes making good afterwards: plastering is part of the job, not an extra you have to arrange yourself, and our teams are known for meticulous clean-up. Your home should look right when we leave, not like a building site.
Why Glasgow homeowners and landlords choose Home Rewire
We hold a 4.9 star rating from 647 Google reviews, and the same things come up in them again and again: tidy work, honest advice, and electricians who take the time to explain things. We have been doing this since 2000, and although we have grown into the market leader for domestic electrical work in Scotland, we have kept the way of working that a family firm should have.
For landlords with properties across Glasgow, we can handle EICRs for a single flat or a whole portfolio, with certificates issued promptly so you stay compliant. For homeowners, we treat your house the way we would want our own treated, whether it is a straightforward inspection or the start of a bigger conversation about your wiring.

Frequently asked questions
How often do I need an EICR in Scotland?
If you let a property privately in Scotland, the law requires a valid EICR renewed at least every five years, or sooner if the report recommends it. For owner-occupied homes there is no legal requirement, but an inspection every ten years, or when buying or selling, is the widely accepted guidance.
How long does an EICR inspection take?
It depends on the size and age of the property and how many circuits there are. A typical Glasgow flat is usually done within a few hours, while a larger house takes longer. Your electrician will give you a realistic estimate when you book so you can plan your day.
What does it mean if my EICR is unsatisfactory?
It means the inspection found at least one C1 or C2 fault that needs to be put right. It does not automatically mean you need a full rewire. Your electrician will walk you through each item on the report, explain what is urgent, and give you honest options for the remedial work.
Do you cover my part of Glasgow?
Almost certainly. We are based in Newton Mearns and cover all of Greater Glasgow, including the Southside, West End, East End, city centre and the surrounding towns. If you are unsure, just give us a call and we will confirm.
If the EICR shows my home needs rewiring, can you do that too?
Yes. Rewiring homes is our specialism, and it is what most of our 647 Google reviews are about. If your wiring has reached the end of its life we will explain why, plan the work around you, include the plastering, and leave your home clean and tidy when we are done.
