The Gym Near Netherlee Built for Mums, by Mums

A Gym Where You Actually Belong

If you have ever stood at the door of a big commercial gym and thought 'this is not for me', you are exactly who we built Strength in Mums for. We are a female-only strength and conditioning gym on Glasgow's southside, just up the road from Netherlee, and everything we do is designed around the realities of being a mum.

That means small-group coaching where the coach actually knows your name, your history and whether you had a rubbish night's sleep. It means programming that meets you where you are, whether you are six weeks postnatal or your youngest just started at Netherlee Primary and you finally have a morning to yourself.

No mirrors-and-machismo, no being left to figure out a machine on your own. Just good coaching, heavy-enough weights, and a room full of women who get it.

Our Signature Sessions: The 6am Lift and Mums & Babies

The 6am Lift is for the mums who want to train before the house wakes up. You are in, you lift, you are home before the school run. It is quiet, focused, and honestly a wee bit addictive. Plenty of our 6am regulars say it is the only hour of the day that is properly theirs.

Mums & Babies is exactly what it sounds like: bring the wee one along. Babies come in prams or on playmats beside you while you train, and nobody bats an eyelid at a mid-session feed or a nappy change. It is one of the few places on the southside where 'I have the baby' is not a reason to skip your session.

Both classes are coached in small groups, so movements get scaled to you. Postnatal recovery, pelvic floor considerations, returning after a section, we programme around all of it rather than pretending it does not exist.

Easy to Get to From Netherlee

We are based on Glasgow's southside, a short hop from Netherlee whether you are coming from Clarkston Road, up past Linn Park or over from Stamperland. Most of our Netherlee members are through the door within ten minutes of leaving the house, which matters when your training window is exactly one hour between drop-off and the next thing on the list.

A lot of our community comes from Netherlee, Clarkston, Cathcart and Muirend, so there is every chance you will train next to someone whose kids go to the same school as yours. That is half the point. Friendships from the gym floor spill into coffee afterwards and playdates at Linn Park more often than you would think.

Why Strength Training, and Why Now

Strength training is one of the best things a woman can do for her body at any stage of motherhood. Carrying car seats, lifting toddlers, hauling shopping up the front steps: life as a mum is a strength sport, and training for it makes everything easier.

It also does wonders beyond the practical. Bone density, energy, mood, confidence. Many of our members tell us the biggest change is not what they see in the mirror but how they feel walking into a room. Strong is a lovely thing to feel when the rest of life is chaotic.

You do not need to be fit to start. You do not need to know what a deadlift is. You just need to turn up, and we will take it from there, at your pace, with proper coaching every step.

Frequently asked questions

I have never lifted weights before. Is this gym still for me?

Absolutely. Most of our members had never touched a barbell before joining. Every session is coached in small groups, so you learn the movements properly from day one and everything is scaled to your level. Nobody is ever thrown in at the deep end.

How soon after having a baby can I start training?

That depends on you, your birth and your recovery, so we always chat it through first. Our coaching is postnatal-friendly, meaning we programme around things like pelvic floor recovery and returning after a caesarean. Once you have had your postnatal check-up, come and talk to us and we will build a sensible starting point together.

Can I really bring my baby to a class?

Yes, that is the whole point of our Mums & Babies sessions. Babies come along in the pram or on a playmat beside you while you train. Feeds, cuddles and nappy changes mid-session are completely normal here.

Is the gym women-only all the time?

Yes. Strength in Mums is a female-only gym, full stop. We built it that way so women, and mums in particular, have a space where they can train without feeling watched or judged.

What if I can only train before the kids wake up?

That is exactly why the 6am Lift exists. It is a coached small-group strength session designed so you can train and be home before the morning madness starts. If you are coming from Netherlee, you can realistically be back for breakfast.
