A Gym in Thornliebank Built for Mums, By Mums

Not Your Average Gym

Strength in Mums is a female-only strength and conditioning gym serving Thornliebank and Glasgow's southside, and it exists for one reason: mums deserve a space where they can train properly, without the noise, the mirrors-and-machismo, or the guilt about bringing the wee one along.

Everything here is coached in small groups, so you're never left wandering around wondering what to do with a barbell. Whether you've lifted for years or the heaviest thing you've picked up lately is a toddler and a changing bag, our coaches meet you exactly where you are.

We're community-first, always. Most of our members found us through another mum at the school gates or a chat at a Thornliebank playgroup, and that says everything about the kind of place this is.

The 6am Lift and Mums & Babies Classes

Our signature 6am Lift is for the mums who want their training done before the house wakes up. It's quiet, focused strength work with a small group of women who all understand why you're there at that hour. You'll be home before the porridge is on.

Can't get out without the baby? You don't have to. Our Mums & Babies classes are exactly what they sound like: bring your wee one along, pop them down beside you, and train around feeds, naps and the occasional greet. Nobody bats an eyelid here, because we've all been there.

Both sessions are built around proper strength and conditioning, not fluffy workouts. You'll squat, hinge, press, pull and carry, with weights scaled to you, because strong mums make everything else in life a bit easier.

Postnatal-Friendly Coaching That Actually Understands

Coming back to training after having a baby is not the same as starting a couch-to-5k. Your body has been through something huge, and it deserves coaching that respects that. Our sessions are postnatal-friendly by design, with sensible progressions for core and pelvic floor considerations and no pressure to rush.

We'll never push you into anything that doesn't feel right, and we'll never make you feel behind. Progress at our gym looks like carrying the car seat without a second thought, chasing kids round Rouken Glen without getting puffed out, and feeling like yourself again. That's the goal, and we'll get you there at your pace.

Easy to Get To From Anywhere on the Southside

We're based in Thornliebank, handy for mums coming from Giffnock, Newlands, Pollokshaws, Barrhead and right across Glasgow's southside. Thornliebank train station and regular buses along the main road make us easy to reach without the car, though plenty of members drive in with the pram in the boot.

If you're local, you'll probably already know a few faces here. If you're new to the area, honestly, this gym is one of the fastest ways to meet other mums nearby. The coffee and blether after class is as much a part of the session as the lifting.

Frequently asked questions

I've never lifted weights before. Is this gym right for me?

Absolutely. Most of our members had never touched a barbell before joining. Every session is small-group coached, so you'll be shown everything from scratch and the weights are always scaled to you. Nobody is ever thrown in at the deep end.

How soon after having a baby can I start training?

It varies for every mum, and we'd always suggest waiting until you've had your postnatal check and feel ready. Once you join, our coaches will adapt your training around where you're at, including core and pelvic floor considerations, so you can build back gradually and safely.

Can I really bring my baby to class?

Yes, that's exactly what our Mums & Babies classes are for. Bring your wee one along, keep them beside you while you train, and pause whenever you need to for feeds or cuddles. It's completely normal here.

Is the gym really women-only?

It is. Strength in Mums is a female-only space, built specifically for mums on the southside. Many of our members tell us that's exactly what made them feel comfortable enough to walk through the door in the first place.

What should I bring to my first session?

Just comfy clothes you can move in, trainers, a water bottle and yourself. If you're coming to a Mums & Babies class, bring whatever your wee one needs. We'll sort the rest, including a friendly welcome and a proper introduction to how everything works.
